Highland Sparks: Youth Development
Igniting a Lifelong Love for the Ride
Every great fire starts with a single spark. The Highland Sparks is our youth development program designed for our youngest and newest riders (typically 3rd–5th grade). Before they join our interscholastic teams or the Highlanders, we provide the "spark" that builds confidence, community, and foundational bike handling skills.
Our Focus: Fun & Fundamentals
The Sparks program isn't about the podium; it’s about the joy of being on two wheels. We focus on:
Balance & Control: Mastering the "ready position," effective braking, and basic bike handling.
Trail Etiquette: Learning how to share the woods, respect nature, and ride responsibly.
Game-Based Learning: We use on-bike games to teach technical skills in an environment where kids forget they’re "training."
Confidence Building: Overcoming small obstacles on the trail to build big confidence in life.
The Pathway to the Highlanders
Highland Sparks serves as the incubator for our more competitive programs. As riders grow in age and ability, they have a clear path forward:
Highland Sparks: Learn the basics and have fun.
LHYC Interscholastic (NICA): Join the Ligonier Valley Rams, Hempfield Area Spartans or the Laurel Highlands Composite team for middle and high school adventure and racing.
Highlanders (USAC): Step up to our premier regional race team for high-performance competition.
Family-First Atmosphere
Like all LHYC programs, the Sparks rely on our amazing community of parents. Since Sparks sessions focus on local parks and accessible trails, it is the perfect place for parents to get involved, learn the NICA Level 1 coaching basics, and ride alongside their children.!
